Police: Armed standoff in Medford over, one man dead

Update (3/17 4 p.m.)Medford Police have identified the man involved in the officer involved shooting as 49 year-old Andrew Charles Shipley.

Medford Police Chief Tim George says preliminary information shows that police started shooting after Shipley raised his garage door and fired a shot at them. Officials say Shipley’s girlfriend was in the process of evicting Shipley when the incident began.

Update (3/17 12 p.m.)One man is dead following an officer involved shooting at a home on Argyle and Ross Lane in west Medford.

Police are working to determine if one of the two dogs inside the home at the time is dead or alive.

The more than 18 hour-long standoff ended with what police described as a single gunshot from a man inside home followed by a barrage of shots fired by police into the home.

The incident began over the weekend with two welfare calls made by either a friend or girlfriend to police.

The incident escalated on Monday afternoon around 3:30 when police learned about weapons inside the home where the man was held up. Police say the threats became more serious and SWAT was called in.

“The man was pronounced dead after the 10:00 a.m. after an officer involved shooting, announced by Medford Police Chief, Tim George.

George says the case will eventually be handed over to Oregon State Police investigators and heard by a Grand Jury.

More information is expected to follow a 3:00 p.m. press conference.

Update (3/17 10:45 a.m.)

The armed standoff in the 300 block of Argyle Court in Medford appeared to be at an end around 10:30 this morning.

NBC5’s Travis Koch is on scene. He said heavy gunfire recently broke out.

Paramedics were let into the home where police say an armed man was barricaded inside.

The standoff started around four o’clock Monday afternoon.

Details are scarce. Count on NBC5 news to bring you the latest updates as they become available.

Police are still on scene and have the subject contained. Argyle Circle is closed but surrounding streets are open.

Medford Police and SWAT were still on scene on the 300 block of Argyle Court trying to get the barricaded man out of his Girlfriend’s home safely.

The street lights along N. Ross Ln. were turned off for an hour from around 9:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.. The man’s sister and Medford Police were speaking to the man over a loud speakeraskinghim to come call or text police so that they can talk.

Medford Police say it began just before 4:00 p.m. after a welfare check call. Policebelieve the suspect is armed and a danger to himself and/or others.

Police say this is the third time they’ve made contact with the suspect since this weekend.

Police, a SWAT team and hostage negotiators are on scenetalking with him over the phone to get him out.

As a matter of public safety, neighbors are being kept from the area.
