Police say car thefts are up 126% in Medford

Medford, Ore. — Medford police say they’ve seen a rash of Honda thefts, with five on Monday alone.

According to police, they’ve seen a 126% increase in car thefts so far in 2014. The raw numbers of stolen cars are more than double what police saw at the same time last year.

“Last year to date we had about 30 stolen vehicles, UUMV, what we refer to as unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. This year to date from January 1 to the end of March, we’re at about 68,” said Sergeant Brent Mak with the Medford Police Department.

Police said Hondas have been the most reported stolen car for the last four years nationwide.

While the city of Medford has seen a rash of Hondas getting stolen, according to police, Fords are actually the most stolen vehicle in Medford followed by Toyotas and then Hondas.

Mak said the it’s unknown why there’s been such a spike in car thefts.

In addition, Mak said at least half of the time in stolen car reports, people have left their cars unlocked.

Police suggest drivers lock their cars and keep them parked in sight.
