60-year-old Tim Moore has been homeless for the last 2.5 years and lately, he’s not getting much sleep.
“I haven’t slept good since this started. I get three hours of sleep, wake up in the middle of the night,” he said.
The unease beginning once police started finding bodies in the Yreka Creek area. Police have said the first body belonged to a transient. Authorities have not confirmed much information about the second person they found. Now the third body in the last eight months was discovered Wednesday.
“This is overwhelming what’s happening right now,” said Moore.
“It is scary.”
On Thursday special undercover agents with the Department of Justice took time out of their usual assignments to help Yreka Police alert people to stay away from the creek.
“We’re contacting people in the camps anywhere in the greenway area,” began one of the undercover agents.
“What we’re telling folks is if they are homeless that they should be together…keep out of the more desolate areas.”
They also passed out flyers.
“The public is being asked to stay out of Yreka Creek until further notice,” read Moore from the press release he had in his pocket.
Meanwhile, Moore says he’s spent his last night on the creek.
“I’m off the creek […] I am now relocated to a safer area I hope,” Moore said.
“I’m 60-years old and I don’t need to die now.”
He’s heeding the warnings and taking his safety into his own hands.
