Portland man arrested after trying to abduct a child

Portland, Ore. — A Portland man is behind bars tonight, after the police say he attempted to kidnap a two-year-old child.

Police say the mother and her child were walking in northwest Portland the afternoon of Wednesday, March 25th, when 23-year-old Matthew Lee Edwards walked up to the pair, pushed the mother down and tried to grab the child.

Police say Edwards claimed the child belonged to another family, even though the mother did not know who he was.

Police say bystanders then helped the mom by forcing the suspect away from her and the child.

The two-year-old was not physically hurt.

Edwards is charged with first-degree attempted kidnapping.
