Protecting plants from freezing temperatures

CENTRAL POINT, ORE. — Flowers and plants have begun to bloom over the past few weeks, a sure tale sign that spring has arrived.

But this week, temperatures in some areas could drop near or below freezing.

Tim Elbert, owner of Four Seasons Nursery in Central Point says, if you can’t bring your plants inside, try putting a cover over the plants.

You don’t want to use a plastic cover however, because that can actually suffocate the plant, make it sure it has breathing holes. An old bed sheet would work just fine.

Not all plants need to be covered, it’s those annual flowers that really need protection.

For the plants you can’t cover, such as fruit trees, Elbert saysyou should use a hose or sprinkler system in the early morning hours to prevent them from freezing over.

The average last freeze of the year depending on where you are is in late April or Early May.
