Roseburg, Ore. –Two teenage boys are dead after they were dared to swim across the South Umpqua River.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a water rescue on the river at the end of Charter Oaks Road in Roseburg just after seven p.m. on Saturday.
Deputies say 16-year-old Dustin Conopa and 17-year-old Froylan Carrion-Estrada were seen going under the water and not resurfacing.
Deputies say one boy began to drown and the other went back to help.
Around 10:45 Sunday morning the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office dive team found the two boys at the bottom of the river in 20 feet of water just a few inches apart.
