Utah lawmakers vote to allow firing squad

Utah — A bill passed by the Utah state house and senate could make it the only state in the U.S. where the death penalty could be carried out by firing squad.

Right now, the bill is headed to the Governor’s desk, but he has not said if he’ll sign it.

The bill would allow for a fire squad only if there’s a shortage of execution drugs used in lethal injection.

Sponsors say the goal of the legislation is to give the state options.

Utah’s next execution is not scheduled for another two years.

Right now, the Department of Corrections doesn’t have the execution drug and because of a nationwide shortage they can’t buy it either.
