Woman arrested after Grants Pass standoff

Grants Pass, Ore. — Multiple streets in downtown Grants Pass were closed Saturday morning after a standoff between police and a woman threatening suicide.

Grants Pass Police said they responded to a call about a 58-year-old woman leaving her home with a gun and making suicidal statements around 4:00 Saturday morning.

Officers located the vehicle the woman left in around 7:00. When they did, she barricaded herself in the vehicle for an hour. Then she fled.

“We put out some spike strips to deflate tires should she choose to leave and we also had a close perimeter set up to not allow her to leave,” Lieutenant Todd Moran said. “Two blocks away the Saturday morning market was starting to fill up with people so we wanted to contain this as much as we could.”

Officers said after the woman hit the spike strips she ran into a fire truck. The SWAT team was on scene as well as the negotiations team and Grants Pass Fire.

The woman was eventually taken to Three Rivers Medical Center for evaluation. She was released and is now in the Josephine County Jail.
