Yreka homicide investigation

Yreka, Ca. — Anormally quiet residential street in Yreka, California isnow riddled with police tape. Yreka Police say a house on the 100 block of Howard Street where 34 year old Erika Lemere was found dead Wednesday, July 1.

Lemere shared the homewith the manYPD says murdered her, Kaleb Landon. Landon was was later shot dead by police in Oregon.

“Last night as the situation unfolded there was a lot of emotion going on in this neighborhood behind me,” said Yreka Police Chief Brian Bowles.

YPD and California Highway Patrol responded to the home Wednesday afternoon when a reporting party said they thought there was a possible homicide at the residence.

Chief Bowles says this wasn’t the first time police have responded to calls at the house, but this call was different.

“Inside the residence Yreka Police Discovered the body of a deceased female with obvious signs of foul play,” Bowles explained.

Lemere’s body lay inside the garage still an active part of the crime scene. That’s when tips came pouring in pointing police towards their suspect, Kaleb Landon.

Landon had traveled toOregon turning it into a multi state investigation.

“Oregon authorities contacted the suspect in the vehicle and an officer involved shooting occurred in,” said Bowles.

Landon was shot dead onI5, backing up traffic for hours. Meanwhile, as news of Lemere’s death spread a small memorial began growing near her home.

“I know that the community has a lot of support for the victims family and the situation,” said Bowles. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to them.”
