Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off the Oregon Coast

BANDON, Ore. – A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the Oregon Coast early Wednesday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 2:31 a.m. about 165 miles from Bandon. It registered at a depth of 6.21 miles.

The quake was followed by two more in the same area, a magnitude 3.5 and a magnitude 3.2.

KGW quoted USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin as saying, “It occurred along the Blanco Fracture Zone, which is a very active area and has produced quakes of this size a number of times in the past.”

Baldwin told KGW they’ve had 15 reports of people feeling the quake on land. There has been no reported damage so far.

No tsunami warning or watches related to the earthquakes were issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or the National Weather Service.
