Merle Haggard dead at 79

(NBC) — Country music legend Merle Haggard has died.

The singer recorded more than three dozen number one country hits in a career that spanned six decades.

He’s best known for such patriotic hits as “Okie from Muskogee” and “The Fighting’ Side of Me.”

Haggard died Wednesday, on his birthday, at his home in Northern California of complications from pneumonia.

He was 79-years-old.
