Porterville, Calif. (KSEE) — California’s Tulare County District Attorney has found no criminal activity was committed by a Porterville Police Officer whose K9 was found dead after it had been left in the back of a hot car for over an hour.
The dog, named “Idol” was found dead in the back of a patrol car on June 20.
Porterville Police Chief Eric Kroutil says the accident happened because of a system failure in the police vehicle.
“Officer Oscar Vargas put the dog inside of his K9 vehicle to make sure he cooled down instead of in his kennel,” said Kroutil.
The police vehicle that Idol was left in is equipped to continue running with the air conditioning for hours at a time. It has sensors that should have warned Vargas that the vehicle was shut down.
