UPDATE: Power outage affects thousands

Updated 12/14 5:00 p.m.  Talent, Ore. — Pacific Power crews are making progress tonight after the storm left thousands of people in the dark.

There are still more than 5,000 people without power in Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine Counties. 25,000 residents didn’t have power at the peak of the outage.

Every Pacific Power crew has been out including contract crews like Power Technologies Inc. Monday their men worked on Wagner Creek Road in Talent removing branches from lines and fixing fuse cutouts.

“Talent is pretty bad, but I just finished working out on Highway 140 yesterday when the snow hit. We had a car struck pole that took out two poles then a tree took out a couple of poles there too,” foreman John Geer said.

Geer said he brought on an extra guy after the calls started coming in Thursday night. But they’ve still been working until they have to take a break, sometimes after 40-hours straight.

An update from Pacific Power’s website said crews will be out working well into Monday evening to provide service to everyone who’s out.

Medford, Ore. –  The wet and heavy snow leaves Pacific Power with a big job as downed lines leave 25,000 people in the dark. Crews are hard at work repairing damage in more than a dozen communities. 12,000 Roseburg residents are without power, same with 7,800 people in Grants Pass, and 2,200 in Medford. Street lights were out this afternoon on East Main in downtown Medford and people who live on Almond Street say their power went out around 6:00 this morning, then came back on, before going out again.

“We came back home and noticed the street lights were out again so here we sit, cold,” said Dianne Spence.

Pacific Power says customers who don’t have power should prepare to not have it for 24 to 48 hours. They also want to remind people to stay away from downed power lines. Don’t drive over them because they could still be energized, check on your neighbors, turn your porch light switch on so crews can check to see if their repairs worked. Also to use a fireplace or wood stove to keep warm. Don’t open your refrigerators or freezers, they will keep food inside cold for some time if they remain shut. Generators should be outside or in a well-ventilated unoccupied space. Never use kerosene of propane heaters inside without proper ventilation.
