Dangerous psychiatric patient found after escape from Salem hospital

Salem, Ore. – Police are warning the public to be on the lookout for a dangerous psychiatric patient who may have escaped from the Oregon State Hospital in Salem on Thursday, November 17th, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

OHA said, 28-year-old Jeffrey W. Appelt was admitted to the hospital after being transferred from the Oregon Department of Corrections. Appelt was in custody for firearm-related crimes.

Appelt was last seen at the Salem hospital around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. OHA said two staff members lost visual contact with Appelt when he went into a restroom and did not return.

Hospital officials describe Appelt as 6-feet tall, 272 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt, khaki shorts, and black and yellow Salomon sneakers.

Oregon State Police are currently investigating. Appelt should not be approached. If you have any information, call police.
