Holiday travel tips

Ore. — With just days until the Thanksgiving holiday, Oregon Department of Transportation is reminding people to be prepared before hitting the roads.

ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming says always know before you go. Check sites like Trip Check for road conditions and keep a close eye on the weather.

As one of the busiest travel holidays of the year, Leaming says plan for the worst and hope for the best, leaving yourself plenty of time so you don’t have to rush.

“Chances are you’re going to be traveling over a mountain pass anywhere you go so make sure you have chains or traction tires make sure your car is winter ready and then of course make sure you have things that will keep you comfortable on that trip,” advises Leaming.

Leaming says it’s a good idea to bring blankets, water, and any necessary medication just in case there is a crash and you’re stopped for a long period of time.

A car phone charger is also a good thing to grab before you hit the road.
