Syphilis cases spike in Portland area

PDXPortland, Ore. — Portland is getting some unwanted national attention for syphilis.

The city ranks fifth nationwide in the number of cases per capita and the state ranks eighth. That’s according to data from the Centers for Disease Control.

Through October, the state has seen more than 400 cases of the disease. That’s a large increase when compared to 2007 when only 30 cases were reported statewide.

Men account for about 90 percent of cases but the disease is curable with penicillin or antibiotics.
