Shady Cove residents receive presentation on Jackson County Jail

Shady Cove, Ore. — Citizens in Shady Cove were given an idea on problems facing the Jackson County Jail at tonight’s city council meeting.

Captain Dan Penland was invited to give a presentation on the jail.

He covered the history of the jail, problems they face, and what the citizens can do to help.

Many were concerned with the overcrowding of the jail and the revolving door that it creates.

“There was a lot of questions about what can they do, how do we stop the in and out — the revolving door cycle,” explained Capt. Penland.

The jail has been running at capacity for the past 30 years.

Only 230 beds are available now — 62 are being added with the reopening of the basement this summer.
