Suspects involved in stabbing, standoff appear in court

Nevarez, Carlson MugshotMedford, Ore. — Two suspects involved in a stabbing and a four-hour long standoff with Medford Police and SWAT appeared in court for the first time Tuesday.

Medford Police said 48-year-old Hank Nevarez and 43-year-old Leila Carlson stabbed a man in the leg at the Albertson’s on West Main Street Monday. Police said the suspects had been in an ongoing dispute with the victim.

Police said Nevarez and Carlson then went to a home on the 900 bock of Murray Street and would not respond to police orders to come out. Hours later SWAT made entry with a search warrant and arrested the two.

Both were arraigned in court today. They’re facing multiple charges including assault 2, a Measure 11 crime, which holds a mandatory minimum sentence of 70 months in jail.

The victim of the stabbing is recovering. Both Nevarez and Carlson are being held in the Jackson County Jail on $1 million bail. They’ll be back in court on December 8th for a preliminary hearing.
