Turkey Slam youth baseball tournament brings many into the Rogue Valley

Medford, Ore. — The annual Turkey Slam youth baseball tournament is the last tournament of its kind this calendar year, and it’s brought in many people from outside the Rogue Valley.

The tournament sold out in space with 30 teams total.

About half of the teams are from places like Portland and Redding.

Interim Parks and Recreation Director Rich Rosenthal says it’s surprising to have 30 teams playing youth baseball this time of year.

He says many places in the Northwest can’t play baseball in the first weekend of November, but the U.S. Cellular Park is a facility that allows tournaments all year round.

“This tournament is helping bring economic benefit to the community and it’s exactly why the city decided to build it so this is the rewards for having a facility like this in our community,” Rosenthal said.

The tournament which is open to the public started this morning and will wrap up Sunday afternoon.
