Update: Identity of suspect shot in Central Point released

Central Point, Ore. – The identity of a suspect who was wounded in an officer involved shooting over the weekend has been released.

Early Sunday morning, a failed traffic stop at Don Jones Park off Hamrick Road lead a Central Point Police Officer to shoot 21-year-old Central Point resident Justin Daniel Lopez at Don Jones Park off Hamrick Road.

Oregon State Police said after eluding the officer, Lopez stopped, got out of his vehicle and walked towards the officer while holding a gun.

OSP said Lopez’s actions resulted in the officer firing his weapon. After the shooting, Lopez was taken to the hospital with potentially life threatening injuries. As of Tuesday afternoon, he was listed in critical condition, according to OSP.

The police officer was not injured in the shooting.

The Jackson County Major Assault and Death Investigation Unit is leading the investigation, along with the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.
