The first genetically modified animal has been approved for consumption in the US.
The Food and Drug Administration says genetically modified salmon is safe to eat and can be sold in the US.
The FDA approved Aqua-Bounty Technologies’ application for its Aqua-Advantage Salmon, a fish engineered to grow much faster than usual.
The company will not be required to label its fish as genetically modified.
Critics worry the salmon will be able to escape and breed with wild fish but the FDA says the approved salmon is only allowed to be farmed in land-based tanks in two places, Panama and Canada.
