(NBC News) Ignoring a veto threat from President Obama, the House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill to suspend the Syrian refugee program.
The final vote was 289 for, and 137 against.
The bill adds more layers of screening and brings the program to admit Syrian and Iraqi refugees to the United States to a standstill.
Dozens of Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the bill, providing enough votes to override a veto.
The vote comes six days after the deadly terror attacks in Paris, which fueled concerns about ISIS trying to use the refugee program to attack the U.S.
