Okinawa stalemate continues

11.07 OKINAWA(NTV) The disagreement over the relocation of a U.S. military base in Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture escalated further Friday.

Okinawa’s governor shot down a government order to reverse his position and allow construction work.

Japan’s government wants to relocate the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to the sparsely populated Henoko district of Nago.

Okinawans want the base moved out of the prefecture.

The governor cancelled a permit issued by his predecessor allowing ocean reclamation work, part of the relocation process.

Government officials in Tokyo ordered that he reinstate the permit.

The governor says the prefecture’s position is legally justified.

Officials in Tokyo say they will issue a stronger order and seek a court ruling if Onaga again refuses to comply.
