Titanic discovered 30 years ago today

9.01 TITANIC

September 1st marks 30 years since one of the biggest oceanic discoveries ever. Scientists from the United States and France found the wreckage of the RMS Titanic in 1985.

In 1986, researchers took a submarine to the shipwreck and began exploration and recovery efforts.

The legendary cruise ship had been lost since it hit an iceberg and sank in 1912. About 1,500 passengers and crew died when the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York.

The last known survivor died in 2009.
