Yreka restricts bulk water sales

Yreka, Calif. — A new restriction on bulk water was imposed in Yreka. The city is now limiting sales of bulk water to only residents living in the 96097 zip code.

The city manager tells us they made the decision to accommodate those in the city who pay city taxes, while also trying to control the amount of agriculture in the area as well, such as marijuana grows.

Now only people who live within the zip code encompassing much of the city may purchase up to five tokens each week, with each token providing 250 gallons of water.

“This is just a big inconvenience, that’s being unfair. If they’re going to target some people, then go in and target them. But don’t punish me for the acts of others. that’s just wrong,” said Russell Mathis, Montague resident.

Mathis doesn’t live in Yreka, but until now he’s been buying bulk water from the city for four years. He called the restriction an injustice to the community.Mathis said he’s not sure where he’ll get his water now.

The city of Yreka told us people can contact local water transport providers and farmers
to get water elsewhere.
