White City VA holds free “Stand Down” for area veterans

White City, Ore. — Thousands of veterans and their spouses were invited to take part in a free resource fair at the VA in White City. For more than 20 years the VA has hosted a stand down event, offering free court services, employment opportunities, health care check ups and food and clothing.

Organizers and veterans say it’s a needed resource that hasn’t always been available for veterans.

“In Jackson County alone we have over 28,000 veterans,” coordinator Bob Huff says, “we have a very high population of veterans in this whole area.”

“When they get discharged from the service they’re not really informed on their benefits,” veteran Joe Nailor adds, “I mean I remember back in the 60’s and 70’s you were just kind of on your own.”

If you couldn’t make it out to Wednesday’s event, you can contact the Southern Oregon VA to get connected with many of the vendors from the event.
