California voters approve recreational marijuana

0629 california marijuanaSacramento, Calif. – Californians over the age of 21 will soon be able to legally grow, possess and use recreational marijuana. Over half of Californian voters approved Proposition 64 on Thursday.

According to the Official California Voter Guide, Prop 64 paves the way for additional tax revenues ranging from hundreds of millions of dollars to over $1 billion annually. Criminal justice costs could be reduced by tens of millions of dollar annually.

Opponents of the proposition said legalizing recreational marijuana presents a danger to the public and children. Proponents argue Prop 64 has the nation’s strictest protection for children, and will provide billions of dollars of tax revenue that will benefit the community.
