Crime rates increase in Medford

Medford, Ore. — Medford Police are noticing an increase across the board in both violent and non-violent crimes.

Among the most alarming–robbery is up more than 65% with 81 cases, compared to 49 in 2015.

Arson has increased by more than 40%, with 37 reported cases. Trespass is up by nearly 60% with 728 instances this year.

The numbers are taken from statistics spanning from January of 2016 year to the end of September 2016.

They’re being compared to crimes committed in the same time frame in 2015.

Counterfeit cases are up 109% and credit card fraud is up by nearly 50%.

Police said that’s something everyone should watch out for, especially during the holiday season. “Protect their, their wallets, their purses, their credit cards when they’re making purchases at stores, to be very cognizant of that valuable little piece of plastic, because in the hands of the wrong people, they can do a lot of damage,” said MPD Lieutenant Kerry Curtis

Police say car break-ins are up 175% and stolen cars have also increased by more than 20%.

Officers are reminding everyone to remove purses, shopping bags and garage door openers—and always lock your car doors.
