Dog stuck in abandoned West Virginia mine

nc_trappeddog1012_1500x845Mingo County, W. Virginia (WSAZ) — A West Virginia family says they’ve run out of avenues to turn as they try to rescue their dog, trapped in an abandoned mine shaft for nearly two weeks.

Ivan Thornsbury was coon hunting with his 4-year-old dog Kate, a Treeing Walker breed, when Kate disappeared.

He used a GPS tracking device to pin her location and discovered she was stuck underground at an abandoned mine site.

“When I got to this hole right here, she started barking,” Thornsbury said. “I couldn’t see her, but I could hear her underground.”

He says he tried finding other openings around the hillside but couldn’t find any.

“It’s very rough terrain,” Thornsbury’s stepdaughter Goldie Belcher said, “and it would take a lot of effort to get to her, but I think Kate or any other animal or human is worth the effort.”

Belcher says they’ve reached out to every agency they can think of to try to get help, but they haven’t had any luck.
