Hems for Homeless; seamstress aims to give hope to area homeless

Medford, Ore. — It’s often said there are 3 ways that people can give; their time, their talent, and their treasure. A Rogue Valley woman is bringing her talents to the streets, in an effort to encourage the area’s homeless, one stitch at a time.

“I’m going to hem dress pants, and dress shirts for free to the homeless,” Marjorie Weikert says.

You don’t have to look too hard in Downtown Medford to see the need.

“What can I do,” Weikert asked herself,  “what do I have time for?”

Just months ago, the full time mom saw a $49 sewing machine on Black Friday, and she taught herself with the help of YouTube.

“There are certain stitches that I didn’t know the names of, it was kind of a struggle.”

Fast forward to today, and Marjorie Weikert’s bargain buy has become an inspiration to hem for the homeless. And if anyone understands the need, it’s her. She hasn’t just seen the problem of homelessness, she’s lived it.

“The last time I was homeless wasn’t that long ago.”

But now, with a roof over her head she wants to give back, in the best way she knows how.

“I’ve got a living room, I’ve got a sewing machine, I’ve got YouTube, and I have learned to hem well.”

Marjorie will be at Alba Park on Wednesday, April 27th from 11 to 3 if you know someone who could use her help with a hem or a repair. You can also learn more about her project and donate thread or other materials by contacting her HERE.
