(NBC News) — Hurricane Hermine slammed into the Florida panhandle overnight, delivering 80 mile per hour winds, torrential rain and a powerful storm surge.
The storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands and is being blamed for at least one death.
Now a tropical storm, Hermine continues to push up the East Coast. Parts of Georgia and the Carolinas are now under a state of emergency.
“Our goal is to be over-prepared and underwhelmed when it comes to this storm. We want everyone to please be safe,” North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory said.
Officials are also warning beach-goers that dangerous rip currents are expected throughout the holiday weekend.
