Iconic “Barnum’s Animal Crackers” set free

CHICAGO, Ill. (CNN) – After more than a century locked up, Barnum’s Animal Crackers are no longer behind bars.

The box for the classic Nabisco snack has been re-designed.

Instead of caged on a boxcar, the beloved animals are now shown outside, roaming among grass and trees.

Barnum’s Animal Crackers brand has been around for more than 115 years.

This change comes a year after Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus shut down the big top citing high operating costs.

The advocacy group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is claiming some credit for the move.

PETA says the new design is the result of discussions it had with Nabisco’s parent company Mondelez International.
