It takes a teacher: Ms. Jansen’s story

Central Point, Ore.–  Samantha Jansen’s third graders are nearly fluent in Spanish.

“Kids have an ability to kind of soak it up,” says Jansen.

The language immersion program at Jewett Elementary School offers a unique opportunity for their young learners and Jansen’s class is spearheading the path.

“We teach both English and Spanish academically.  60% Spanish right now and 40% English.”

Since kindergarten these little ones have been perfecting their bilingual skills.

“They can read write and speak it in both languages,” Jansen says.

Bilingual herself, it’s a life long tool that Jansen knows will set her kiddos off towards a bright and successful future.

Samantha say, “I just hope that they are enjoying themselves at school, that they have good role models and that they are learning what they need to learn.”
