13th annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony honors UCC victims

Ashland, Ore. — The 13th annual Menorah Lighting Ceremony in the Ashland Plaza was dedicated to the victims of the Umpqua Community College shooting in Roseburg.

A survivor of the UCC shooting lit the menorah Sunday night, the first night of Hanukkah. Evan Burns is studying business and history at UCC and was at the school when the gunman opened fire in October killing nine people.

Burns helped his fellow students stay safe and barricade their room. He recalled the events and encouraged everyone to be a light amidst darkness, “no one knew what to do people were breaking down people were freaked out of their minds and I asked myself, am I going to die this day?”

A local rabbi led the crowd in song and prayer for those killed in the UCC shooting and other victims of violence throughout the country.
