A 4-H lesson in heart

Klamath Falls, Ore. – A 4-H member’s tragedy turned into an amazing lesson in giving at Sunday’s Rotary Livestock Auction in Klamath Falls.

Breanna Blodgett was preparing to sell her pig ‘Brick’ at this year’s fair.

Willie Riggs of Klamath County Rotary explains that something went terribly wrong…

“One of our young 4-H members, their animal actually got sick and passed away.”

Word spread quickly through the 4-H community.

Riggs says that’s when Grace Maxfield of the Crystal Springs 4-H club stepped forward…

“Donated the young lady her extra animal so that this one how had a pig to show, has a pig to sell.”

Showing the pig was an emotional effort for Breanna Blodgett of the Midland Porkies 4-H chapter…

“I pretty much just had a lot of people helping me through it. That’s pretty much how I’ve been dealing with it.”

Sherm’s Thunderbird made the winning bid for Grace Maxfield’s grand champion lamb…but it was Maxfield’s generosity to Breanna Blodgett that won the hearts of the crowd.

“And it’s just a true compassion story about how our 4-H kids treat each other.” Notes Willie Riggs.

And the lesson hasn’t been lost on Breanna…

“I’m going to try and help other 4-H members if it comes to it.”
