Applegate Lake, Ore. — Nearly 400 winter steelhead fish died near the Applegate dam.
A truck was planning on transferring the steelhead to the Cole Rivers Hatchery in Trail, the Army Corps of engineers says a cable in the machine loading the fish snapped, trapping some of the fish from getting back into the water and suffocating.
A similar incident happened back in 2002.
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has suggested the Army Corps increase their maintenance budget to prevent this from happening again.
