Auto shop fire damages reach beyond garage doors

American Auto, a long running vehicle repair shop in Medford caught fire early Thursday morning, just as Dereck Rollins was arriving to check on the progress of his truck’s engine repair. What he found was shocking.

“I’m shocked. Very shocked. Just came here to check on my truck this morning and it’s all burnt to a crisp.”

Medford Fire and rescue responded to the call just before 6 a.m. on Summit Avenue and Mcandrews in Medford.

Shortly after, Rollins arrived.

“I was just stopping in to the truck to pick up some tools. (I) Look in there and my truck is under another truck and everything was on fire. That’s my work truck so we’re gonna have to get another vehicle at this rate.”

But Rollins isnt alone in his loss. Owner of American Auto, Jerry Yowman says he wont likely open for weeks- possibly months.

That’s only the half of his devastating story. Two years ago, the same shop was burglarized. The thieves made off with cash and $20,000 in tools.

For Rollins, it’s a blow to his already busy and strenuous life. Working as a general contractor and helping make ends meet for his wife and young daughter.

“It’s gonna be difficult. It’s gonna be very difficult. Wife and daughter. We have two vehicles but the others a jeep and it’s hard to pack anything around.”
