Baby bear caught roaming the halls of RiteAid in Ashland

Update (10/22 4pm)The black bear cub has been transferred to PAWS in Lynwood, Washington. PAWS will be caring for the cub with the goal of returning it to the wild next year.

When Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife veterinarians examined the female cub they said she was a little thin at 13 pounds.

Officials say most black bears are born are born in January, so this cub may be underweight because she was born later in the year or her growth may have been stunted.

ODFW said they hope to release the black bear cub back into suitable habitat in southern Oregon in Spring 2015. Oregon is home to an estimated 25,000-30,000 black bears.

Ashland, Ore. — A baby bear cub decides to venture into Ashland to find some treats and a place to rest.

Sunday afternoon the one month old cub made his way through an open door at the Super 8 Motel on Ashland Street.

After roaming the hallways he was able to get into a room. He eventually escaped through a window then made his way to the RiteAid across the street and began roaming the aisles.

Ashland Police were able to trap the bear in a shopping basket. The bear is now under the care of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

They say because the bear had contact with people, they do not want to release it to the wild. They are looking for a new home at a rehab center or zoo.
