Basketball team donates gear to player who lost hers in the Boles Fire

Weed, Calif. — It’s a bond over basketball that’s helping one Weed woman move forward after her gear was destroyed in the Boles Fire.

Maya Stevens and Noah Everly met in high school, and after many nights playing one on one in Marin, California the two formed a lasting friendship.

“Noah was on the basketball team and in a couple of my classes. He’s a super friendly guy,” Stevens said.

Stevens and Everly ended up going to different colleges. Everly attends William Jessup University in Rocklin, and Stevens is a student at College of the Siskiyous in Weed.

Both continue to play ball.

But when the Boles Fire ripped through Weed on September 15th Stevens didn’t know if her basketball career would be put on hold.

Although her home was not destroyed in the fire most of the things in it were ruined by the smoke, including her basketball gear.

When Everly heard the news he didn’t think twice. He recruited his team to step up. They donated piles of new basketball clothes to Stevens.

“It meant a lot because even though we’re super far and I haven’t talked to him in like a year it still meant a lot to know that he cared,” Stevens said.

Hundreds of miles away and busy with college classes and practice, Everly said he still has Stevens’ back.

“It’s just obviously something no one wants to go through and that’s what friends are for,” he said.

Because as the two basketball lovers know friends watch out for each other on and off the court.
