Beating the triple digit heat

Medford, Ore. — Temperatures in the Rogue Valley tipped the triple digit mark Wednesday, making it one of the hottest days of the year. But that didn’t stop people from going outside to have fun, they just made sure to take extra precautions.

More than 80 kids from the YMCA Summer Camp made a splash at Don Jones Memorial Water Park in Central Point. Assistant Director, Vinny Beretta, said on days like Wednesday they beat the heat by mixing sunshine, water, and shade.

“We have a required five which is water bottle, lunch, sunscreen, towel, and swimsuit,” Beretta said. “The water bottle being one of the most important.”

The kids built forts out of tarps for solace from the sunshine, and are required to take a lot of breaks. Long before the heat peaks in the afternoon, Beretta said they’ll head back to Central High School for indoor activities.

Athletes at U.S. Cellular Fields in Medford know all too well just how hot it got on Wednesday. 39 teams from across the region are facing off in the Western Nationals Softball Tournament. Girls on El Rio All Stars said they drank plenty of water, and wore cool wet rags around their necks to make sure the heat didn’t sap their energy.

In the heat even the crowd had to plan ahead to stay cool. They cheered from underneath tents, and snacked on frozen treats. Employees at the concession stand said ice cream was their best seller.

With the tournament lasting throughout the weekend the girls said they hope for home runs, and maybe a little breeze.
