(NBC News) Controversy continues over the killing of one of Zimbabwe’s national treasures, a lion known as Cecil.
A quiet but poignant demonstration, a collection of stuffed animals, was left at the door of the office of Walter Palmer Wednesday.
Palmer is the American dentist who killed the lion earlier this month.
The killing has sparked anger around the world, with emotion overwhelming many on social media.
According to conservation officials Cecil, the most famous animal in the country’s national parks, was lured away from the game preserve, shot with a bow and arrow, and after more than 40 hours of being stalked, killed with a gun, skinned and beheaded.
Palmer, a life-long hunter, said in a statement released Tuesday that he had hired professional guides and that they secured all proper permits, adding “I had no idea that the lion I took was a known, local favorite.”
Conservationists say Cecil’s death will likely lead to the deaths of his cubs as rival male lions try to take over his now unprotected pride.
