Binge drinking in the U.S. is on the rise

According to a study, heavy drinking and binge drinking are on the rise in the U.S. and women are the main contributors to the increase.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Washington, focused on Americans aged 21 and older, it tracks trends in alcohol use at the county level.

Binge drinking and heavy drinking have increased mainly because women are starting to consume more alcohol. Nationwide, women’s binge drinking rates increased over 11% more than that of their male counterparts between 2005 and 2012.

Areas in the West, Midwest and Northeast show higher alcohol consumption rates than counties in Southern states and Utah.
