Alleged burglar makes himself at home, mingles with tenants

Medford, Ore. — A bizarre burglary over the weekend has neighbors baffled and police on the lookout for the suspect.

It happened Friday at Cedar Tree Apartments on Barnett Road in Medford. Police said the suspect climbed a tree to get into the second story apartment and entered through a sliding back door. They said he spent hours inside, took a shower, napped, and helped himself to the victim’s food and beer.

Neighbor Omara Atkins said she was outside with two friends when the man came out, drinking a beer and listening to music.

“We’re sitting there chatting for over an hour. He goes up and down and in and out of the house like it was nothing so I just assumed my neighbor had a guest,” Atkins said.

But that guest was not invited. Police said he took off with a rifle and ammunition, but left officers with a solid lead. They’re looking for Zack Wilson. He shared his Facebook contact with Atkins and her friends and told them he was heading to Klamath Falls.

“We talked to police and we were going to try to meet up with him that night we were going to see if he would meet us at a bar or something, but he never responded to any of our messages,” Angelica Spencer said.

Police don’t believe Wilson is from the area. Atkins said she never expected anything suspicious when she was talking with him.

“He didn’t seem nervous,” she said. “He just seemed like a chill laid back hippie dude.”

Now she wishes she would have asked him more questions about his reasons for visiting.
