Changes to rec. marijuana testing could curb black market

Jackson Co., Ore. — Local police are hoping changes to marijuana testing may steer people away from selling on the black market.

The Oregon Health Authority is modifying testing standards for recreational marijuana. Beginning December 15, fewer samples will be tested, making the process easier and faster.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputies said while that may curb a local problem, illegal pot often spans state lines.

“It’s legal here, so the black market isn’t that prevalent in our area,” Captain Nathan Sickler said. “But when you start talking about other states, there is a black market.”

The Sheriff’s Office works with the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement Team, or MADGE, along with Jackson County Code Enforcement on these cases.
