Coast Guard rescues fishermen near Cape Blanco

Cape Blanco, Ore. — A Coast Guard swimmer swam nearly the length of a triathlon to rescue four people after their fishing vessel was grounded.

27-year-old Darren Harrity pulled each fisherman more than 250 yards in 57 degree water from their life raft to shore near Cape Blanco early Tuesday morning on July 21st.

The fishermen were met by EMS.

The Coast Guard says they received a report of the fishing vessel taking on water and without power after 1:30 in the morning.

A helicopter was sent to rescue the men, but soon began to experience mechanical issues and was unable to hoist any of the fishermen out of their life-raft.

The incident is still under investigation.
