Defense cuts on the horizon

(NBC News) — The Defense Department has announced planned changes that will reduce the size of each branch of the military.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says the recommendations will reshape the military while continuing to protecting the country’s security.

“We chose further reductions in troop strength and force structure in every military service – active and reserve – in order to sustain our readiness and technological superiority,” Hagel said.

Hagel went on to say that the proposed cuts had one primary focus, keeping America safe.

“We made choices based on strategic priorities, clear facts, unbiased analysis, and fiscal realities… and with the bottom line focus on how best we can defend the United States,” he stated.
