Donation from employer provides hope for fire victims

Grants Pass, Ore. –Hopefora mother and son who lost their home and nearly everything in it to a fire in Grants Pass this weekend.

Brandon Mundy says it was just another Friday until tragedy hit.

“A friend came breaking through the front door yelling to get out and I saw the flames coming out of the kitchen,” he said.

Mundy watched as he and his mom’s home turned to ash. The two were able to get out safely, but one of their dogs died in the fire.

Despite the tragedy, days later Mundy says he’s grateful. He’s worked at Bumgardner’s Landscaping in Central Point for just two months, but he said this weekend he got an unexpected visit from his employers.

“Both owners, Bill and Rod, showed up and talked to me for a little bit, asked me if I needed any time off and definitely cared and were willing to help me out in any way,” Mundy said.

Words of encouragement that Mundy said he needed, but it didn’t stop there. His bosses then gave him and envelope full of cash.

“Words can not describe or say how thankful I am,” he said. “This is going to help my mom and I out a lot.”

One of Mundy’s coworkers, Jeff Mclean, said the Bumgardner’s were happy to help an employee who works so hard.

“Brandon’s a super hard worker. He’s a veteran. He’s always the first person to help, but when it comes to asking for help he’s not that kind of guy he’ll just handle it himself,” Mclean said.

Mundy said the gift provides hope for the family and will help them move forward. He is living with a friend right now and the Red Cross has found his mom a place to stay. But he said the money from the Bumgardner’s will go toward a new place for the two to live in together.

“I didn’t know there was people still like that in the world, so it’s awesome,” he said.

Grants Pass Fire officials said they couldn’t determine the cause of the fire. If you would like to help the family you can donate to their Gofund account by clicking here.
