Apartment fire forces evacuations

Central Point, Ore. — Fire officials are investigating the cause of a blaze that forced evacuations at an apartment complex Saturday afternoon.

Jackson County Fire District 3 and Medford Fire responded to the Sunrise apartment building in Central Point just before 2:30pm.

They say the fire started on the ground floor on the outside of the building but climbed up the wall and spread into the attic. Sixteen units were evacuated, no one was injured.

“Police were here immediately to do evacuations plus the fire started on the exterior of the building so a lot of smoke and heat didn’t get to the interior of the building where it could harm the people that were there,” Deputy Fire Marshal Mark Northrup said.

All the tenants should be able to be back in their apartments tonight with the exception of one or two.
