Drivers being issued tickets for honking at picketers

Some drivers have been punished by law enforcement for honking in support of Medford teachers.

A local woman was slapped with a $160 ticket after she says she was pulled over by a Jackson County Sheriff Deputy for honking at picketers near Griffin Creek Elementary School.

Lt. Mike Budreau of the Medford Police Department said “technically it is illegal to use your horn for that manner.”

Lt. Budreau said the Medford Police Department hasn’t issued any honking citations.

He said “I can’t say that we won’t, I can say that we haven’t, but maybe in more extreme cases we will.”

Lt. Budreau also noted that it’s up to the discretion of the officers on scene. At least 3 citations have been issued by the Sheriff’s Department which is a Class C violation.

Teachers there today put up new signs, warning those driving by that law enforcement agencies were ticketing.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department told NBC 5 that they’re not looking to cite people for horn honking, their main concern is safety.
