Early afternoon fire nearly destorys home

Medford, Ore. — Firefighters and police rush to an East Medford neighborhood Tuesday afternoon after a fire nearly destroys a home.

Medford Fire Chief Brian Fish said the cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but the man who owns the home said he suspects the fire was started on purpose.

The homeowner said he served the renters at the home on Eastwood Drive an eviction notice just hours before the house went up in flames.

The woman who lives in the house was not injured, but was taken away in handcuffs. Medford Police Lieutenant Mike Budreau said she’s just being questioned and isn’t facing any charges at this time.

Medford Fire Chief Brian Fish said it was their second response to the home on Eastwood Drive in an hour. The resident had called the first time to report a Christmas tree fire, but Fish said when they got there it was a false alarm.

But the second call they responded to was a different story.

“The flames were coming out the front so they’re a good 12 to 15 feet when it comes out,” Fish said.

Fish said although they don’t know if the home is a total loss yet, most of the home is badly damaged.
